The research

When maths meets what they love, it sticks.

A decade of research by Walkington and colleagues (2013–2019) found that when maths problems are personalised to what kids genuinely care about, like sport, hobbies, and the things they actually love, they attempt more, make fewer conceptual errors, and understand more, with the biggest gains for the kids who usually struggle and on the hardest problems. But the depth matters: it only works when the real numbers of the interest drive the maths. It does not work when you just swap “trains” for “LeBron.”

Fewer conceptual errors

When the context is a sport they already know, kids build an accurate picture of the problem before they touch the numbers. That means they make fewer conceptual mistakes.

Understanding, not guessing

Real sport quantities scaffold the jump from a concrete situation to the abstract maths. The result is genuine understanding, not pattern-matched drill answers.

More willing to try

Kids who care about the context attempt more problems and stick with the hard ones instead of shutting down. Interest does the motivating that anxiety usually undoes.

FanMaths is built on this research. Sport isn't a reward for doing maths. It IS the maths.

Three steps

Simple by design.

01

Pick your sport

Basketball now, with cricket and AFL coming. Your kid picks the sport they love.

02

Solve real problems

Shooting percentages, run rates, goal conversion. Every question comes from a real game scenario.

03

Win matches, advance the season

Progress through a season campaign. Wins are earned by solving problems correctly, not by grinding.

For parents

Built for trust, not retention.

If you've been burned by another maths app, here's what's different.

No anxiety mechanics.

Sport-framed problems that feel like analysis, not a test.

We teach maths. We don't gamify it.

Your kid's progress is real.

Deep sport integration, not a speed-race skin.

Every problem is grounded in real sport.

The unclaimed age band

8–13

The age band where sport obsession peaks and maths engagement starts to collapse.

Most apps go babyish early or serve K–12 so broadly they serve nobody. FanMaths lives exactly here.
